Bio/Description
My name is Briana Payton and I am a senior from Detroit, MI majoring in the Sociology Department with minors in African American Studies, American Studies, and Spanish Language and Culture. I am interested in racial identity formation, both what social structures and interactions contribute to it, as well as what social behaviors result from one's identity. My junior paper explored racial identity in 1.5 and 2nd generation Black Migrants and my senior thesis will focus on Black students at highly selective predominately White institutions in order to understand how their background and identity shape their narratives of personal success and notions of group uplift.
